Measles
Unfortunately, people are more easily swayed by personal accounts and stories than they are by evidence and research. They hear “facts” from people they know, or think they know, like celebrities. It’s also hard to change the public opinion once an idea has been established. But I love what Dr. Peter Nieman said about the virulence of measles in particular and how easy it is to control and wipe out in a population with vaccines.

It is common for many people to feel down during this time of the year. Aside from the holiday stress we are all much too familiar with, a few reasons is that, one, most people don’t get out and be as active in the colder weather as they did in the warmer seasons. Another reason is that we are not receiving the amount of light we need in order to stimulate the brain chemistry that keeps us focused and energized during the summer. This is due to the fact that the days are shorter and also that the angle of the sun is steeper so we don’t get the right part of the spectrum. We need the blue spectrum to stimulate our brain to make serotonin and other brain chemicals to keep us “up” at this time of year. The smart mammals hibernate during this time of year, but we humans just push through it.

With Remembrance Day coming up it tends to stir up a lot of emotions for people. This year especially so since we’ve seen attacks on our soldiers on our own soil and, lost two dear souls to these attacks. I have also seen more and more stories of people losing their battle with Depression, Anxiety and PTSD – ending in suicide. Members of our military, police forces, and other “first-responders”, unfortunately, are high on this list. In the news stories I hear over and over again the phrase, “He thought he had to be tough and be able to handle it alone.” I’m sick of hearing this and seeing these brave people being taken down (and the horror left behind) by a misunderstanding of what “real tough” is.
